Balancing Screen Time and Real Life Activities

Guidance & Support
Balancing the Real and Digital World

While online learning at Kentucky Virtual Academy offers a lot of flexibility, one of the biggest challenges students face is balancing the digital world with real-life activities. This is especially true for KYVA students, who spend most of their day on the computer for school and then often turn to technology for leisure afterward. Studies show that without a proper balance students face increased stress, decreased physical activity, and improper sleep patterns leading into unhealthy lifestyles.

Here are some tips to help you find the perfect balance between screen time and real-life activities while attending online school:

Explore Screen-Free Hobbies

It’s important to look into activities that don’t require a screen. Reading a good book or creative writing are good alternatives that allow you to keep your mind active while exploring new worlds. If you’re looking for something more artistic, drawing, painting, crafting, and playing an instrument are all good ways to get those creative juices flowing all while having fun.

Schedule Breaks for Physical Activity

Making sure you’re doing some physical activity throughout the day is very important whether it be playing a sport or stretching, even something as little as taking a small walk has great benefits on your health. An easy way to get some exercise is to get some light yoga in between work sessions, which studies show increase focus and boost energy.

Make Time for Social Connections

One of the common misconceptions about online school is that it limits your ability to socialize. While it’s true that you won’t have daily face-to-face interactions in a physical classroom, it’s still possible to stay socially connected outside of a digital environment. KYVA hosts outings across the state at different times of the year. We also invite students to join the K12 Zone!

Another way to socialize is to plan meetups with your family/friends and catch up with them, offer to go to lunch together or plan activities like basketball to get that face-to-face interaction with them. Even things like study groups can be arranged with students in your area and in person meet-ups would be a great way to make friends.

In addition to exploring screen-free activities, another effective way to create balance is by tracking your screen time and setting limits. You can reduce your overall screen time by designating specific screen free zones in your home or room, where you can go for a break, a snack, or some relaxation. By taking control of your screen habits and being mindful of your time, you can create a healthier balance between the digital world and the world beyond your computer. Remember, it’s all about finding that balance!
