General FAQs
Who is eligible to attend Kentucky Virtual Academy (KYVA)?
Any student in grades K–12 who resides in Kentucky is eligible for full-time enrollment.
How many of my students can I enroll in KYVA?
Because KYVA provides all the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple students in the program.
What does it cost to attend KYVA?
Since KYVA is a public school program, there is no tuition. KYVA provides state-certified teachers and all instructional materials for the program.* However, students and families are responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as printer ink and paper). In addition, families are required to provide their own computers and internet access to participate in the program. KYVA will provide loaner computers as needed, and this determination will take place during the enrollment process.
What subjects will my child study?
Core courses are offered in language arts, math, science, and history. Other courses in the appropriate grade levels include art, health or physical education, music, world languages, and more. High school students can choose from a variety of electives, including career-focused courses.
What information is required to enroll?
Interested students do need to submit an application, and there is additional documentation to upload as part of the enrollment process. Visit our How to Enroll page for more information.
What is the daily attendance expectations?
Students are expected to log in, attend scheduled classes, and actively participate in required instructional activities each school day.
Teachers take attendance daily. In accordance with Kentucky attendance regulations, attendance is recorded each school day, including by class period for middle and high school students.
Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that their student attends school regularly and follows KYVA attendance expectations.
Kentucky Compulsory Attendance
Kentucky law requires school-age children to attend school for the full school term unless they qualify for an exemption provided by law. Parents, guardians, or custodians are responsible for ensuring regular school attendance.
Truancy
Under KRS 159.150:
- A student is considered truant after accumulating three or more unexcused absences or three or more unexcused tardies during the school year.
- A student who is reported as truant two or more times is considered habitually truant.
- Attendance records are cumulative throughout the school year, including attendance records transferred from another Kentucky public school.
Continued unexcused absences may result in additional attendance interventions and referrals required under Kentucky law. Kentucky law provides additional procedures when students accumulate significant numbers of unexcused absences, including circumstances involving 15 unexcused absences and possible county attorney involvement.
Parent/Guardian Responsibility and Penalties
Kentucky law requires parents, guardians, and custodians to comply with compulsory attendance requirements. Intentional failure to comply may result in legal consequences, including a $100 fine for a first offense, $250 for a second offense, and additional penalties for subsequent offenses as provided by KRS 159.990.
Attendance Matters
Daily participation helps students stay connected to their teachers, remain on pace academically, and make consistent progress toward successful completion of their courses.
At KYVA, attendance is required every school day. Students should log in, attend their scheduled classes, participate actively, and communicate with the school when an absence is necessary.
Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
The school calendar includes school holidays or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Parents are encouraged to contact their student’s teacher if they plan a vacation that does not coordinate with the school calendar.
