Virtual Reality Brings Learning to Life at KYVA
Kentucky Virtual Academy (KYVA) teachers are taking learning to the next level with new training in virtual reality (VR).
During a recent professional development day, staff gathered in Cloverport for hands-on training focused on bringing VR directly into the online classroom. Led by College and Career Readiness Education Coordinator Mrs. Hernandez and VR consultants Dr. Shannon and Robin Putman, KYVA staff explored platforms designed to make lessons more interactive, engaging, and career-focused.
“Teachers and admin learned about several VR platforms, including ManageXR, which allows educators to monitor all activity inside each headset, like viewing a student’s live screen, and the Engage platform, which enables VR experiences to be tied directly to classroom standards and Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways,” said Mrs. Hernandez.
Also in attendance were KYVA teachers Mr. Rady, our high school business teacher, who sees many ways to use VR in future business projects, and Mr. Sparks, our computer science and engineering teacher, who noted opportunities for students to code VR programs and create AI characters within the Engage platform.
What does this training mean for students at KYVA?
With VR, students won’t just learn about the world, they’ll step inside it. These immersive projects provide learners with the opportunity to develop confidence, creativity, and practical skills that prepare them for college, careers, and beyond.
With VR inside the classroom this year, KYVA students will get the chance to:
- Pitch business ideas in a Shark Tank–style competition
- Engineer a product from design to production
- Practice public speaking
- Hold “live” chats with history of teaching pioneers
By bringing these immersive experiences into the classroom, KYVA is transforming the way students learn, explore, and prepare for success in the real world. According to Mrs. Hernandez, “the possibilities of projects for students in the VR platform are unlimited.”
